Different product images per language in PrestaShop, no duplicates

To show different product images per language in PrestaShop, you upload each language's photo to the same product and decide which one each customer sees: the German box for someone shopping in German, the French one for France. PrestaShop doesn't do this on its own, because it translates a product's text but not its photos; a module sorts it out without duplicating products.

Picture Jonas, in Cologne. He visits your shop in German looking for sun cream, reads the product page in his own language and, in the photo, sees the tube with an English label. Before buying, he emails you: "Will mine come with a German label?". You know it will, because that's what you ship to Germany. But he didn't know, and plenty of customers like him don't ask: they close the tab.

The same goes for a board game box, a book cover, an appliance manual or those photos with text on top —"Gluten free", "Made in Britain", "Waterproof"— that do so much of the selling. If the photo speaks one language, a customer who doesn't speak it feels the product isn't meant for them.

Can PrestaShop show a different image for each language?

Not out of the box. PrestaShop lets you translate the name, the description and even the alt text of each image, but the image itself is the same in every language. If you upload the English version and the German version, the English and the German customer both see the two of them in the gallery.

That leaves you with two bad options: show everyone a single photo, or show them all and let each customer hunt for theirs. Neither tells the customer what they are actually going to receive.

Why not duplicate the product for each language?

It's the first thing almost everyone thinks of: one product with the English photo and an identical one with the German photo. It works on day one and makes every day after that harder.

  • Two stock levels for the same thing. You sell on one page and the other still shows the same quantity left.
  • Two prices to keep up to date. You change one, forget the other, and a customer comparing them finds two prices for the same product.
  • Both show up in every language. PrestaShop doesn't let you hide a product in one language either, so your German customer sees the English version right next to theirs in the category.
  • Reviews and sales get split. Each copy starts from zero, and to Google they are two near-identical pages competing with each other.

How do you set language-specific product images?

With Product Images per Language for PrestaShop you keep uploading photos as usual, on the product page. Right below them there is a tab for each language showing what that customer will see: their large cover image and the rest of the images in a row.

There you do two things:

  1. Click an image to show or hide it in that language.
  2. Click its star to make it the cover image for that language.

Every click is saved instantly and you see the change in front of you. No need to save the product or open another screen.

Photos without text, for everyone

Usually only a few photos have the language built in. The product in use, a close-up, the dimensions or the colour look the same to everyone, so you leave those alone: they keep appearing in every language. You only limit the ones with text.

And if one day you open a new language, it sees the shared photos and none of the ones you made for another country. Nobody stumbles on another market's label.

Does the cover image change in categories and the cart too?

Yes, and that's where it shows most. The cover is the photo a customer sees before opening the product page: in categories, in search, in the blocks on your home page, in quick view and in the thumbnail in the cart and the order summary.

If you don't pick one, each language uses the product's normal cover and, if that photo isn't in their language, their first image. With the star you set whichever one you want. So a French customer browses a whole category seeing the boxes in French, without opening a single product.

What if each size or colour has its own photos?

That's covered too. In PrestaShop each combination —a size, a colour, a format— can have its own images. With the module, in each language a combination shows only its images that are visible in that language.

You assign the English photo and the German photo to the red box, and each customer sees theirs when they pick red. If a combination is left without photos of its own in a language, it shows the product's photos, as PrestaShop always has.

Does Google Shopping show the right image for each country?

This is the mistake that costs money. You pay for a Google Shopping ad in Germany and the ad shows the English box. The customer never even reaches your shop to read that the product comes in their language: they decide from the photo.

If you build your feeds with Google Merchant Center PRO, each language feed goes out with that language's images and cover, without touching anything in the feed module. Merchant Center picks up the new ones the next time it reads the feed.

There's a decision for you here: the official Google module and the Facebook one read images on their own, without asking PrestaShop, so they will keep sending the usual ones. If you sell in several countries with product ads, it's worth having your feed come from a module like Google Merchant Center PRO.

The same goes for every other place your product appears: the image shown when the page is shared on social media, the data Google reads from the page and the image sitemap all carry the photo in that page's language.

Which photos are worth making in each language?

You don't need to reshoot your catalogue. Start where the customer makes up their mind:

  • The cover image of the products you sell most outside your home country.
  • Photos with text on top: benefits, ingredients, "suitable for", dimensions explained.
  • The packaging or the label if it changes by country: food, cosmetics, drinks, toys.
  • Screenshots if you sell software, courses or digital products with the screen in each language.

If you also change currency or price by country, you'll want to see how to make each customer see the price for their country: the photo and the price are the first two things someone buying from abroad looks at.

Frequently asked questions

Can I have a different cover image in each language?

Yes. In that language's tab you click the image's star and it becomes its cover on the product page, in categories, in the cart and in Google Shopping with Google Merchant Center PRO. The other languages keep theirs.

Does it work with PrestaShop 8 and PrestaShop 9?

Yes, from PrestaShop 1.7.5 to 9, with the classic product page and the new one, and with any theme. In a multistore setup, the same rules apply across every shop.

What happens to my images if I remove it?

Nothing bad: the images stay where they were, because the module doesn't move or copy them. Once it's uninstalled, every image shows in every language again, just as before.

Do I have to configure it before it works?

No. Until you limit an image, your shop keeps showing every image in every language. You start with one product and carry on at your own pace, and under Catalog › Images per language you see the list of products that already have photos per language.

Where can you see it working?

Right here. Every module on bkmodules.com has a cover image with its name written on it, and that cover is made in every language of the shop: open any of them in French or German and you'll see its cover in French or German, on the product page and in the catalogue. All of that runs on Product Images per Language for PrestaShop, which you'll find just below with what's included, compatibility and price.
